The first thing to calculate the kinetic energy is its mass, which is in kilograms (kgs), and its velocity, which is in meters per second (m/s). You can use the above formula when you have the values of mass and velocity.

There are different steps to calculate kinetic energy. Here they are

Step 1: Gathering necessary information

First of all, you should have the values of mass (m) and velocity (v) of the object. For accurate results, you should have correct units of kg for mass and m/s for velocity.

For example, if the mass is 1500 grams, you’ll need to convert it into kilograms which will be 1.5 kgs. Now, if the velocity is 10m/s, just put these values in the formula and get your answer.

Step 2: Square the velocity

Take the value of velocity and square it. When you square the velocity, it will multiply with each other. As we have already the value of velocity that is 10m/s.

Calculate:

v2 = 10 m/s * 10 m/s = 100 m2/s2

Step 3: Multiply the velocity by 0.5 and the mass

You have already gotten the value of velocity in Step 2. Now multiply it by 0.5 and again multiply the result by mass (m). As already we have the value of mass which is 1.5 kg.

Results are:

KE = 0.5 * 2 kg * 100 m2/s2 = 100 Joules

Step 4: Determine the Kinetic Energy

Here you get the value of kinetic energy in joules (J). Because of kinetic energy, you will know the amount of work an object can do due to its motion.

Kinetic energy is also a scalar quantity, that has magnitude and no direction. It depends on the square of the velocity, which is always positive.

If a car is having a mass of 2000kg and moving with a velocity of 20m/s. What is its kinetic energy?

Mass (m) = 1000 kg, Velocity (v) = 30 m/s
KE = 0.5 * 1000 kg * (30 m/s)2
KE = 0.5 * 1000 kg * 900 m2/s2
KE = 450,000 Joules

The kinetic energy of the car is 400,000 Joules.

Example 3:

If a bullet is fired from a gun with a velocity of 500m/s and its mass is 0.01kg. What is its kinetic energy?

Solution:

Mass (m) = 0.01 kg, Velocity (v) = 500 m/s
KE = 0.5 * 0.01 kg * (500 m/s)2
KE = 0.5 * 0.01 kg * 250,000 m2/s2
KE = 1,250 Joules

The kinetic energy of the bullet is 1,250 Joules.
